Recently, I participated in an evening run fundraiser to help a local campaign to help inspire girls in the community build confidence in themselves while running. But after reaching out to the local group coordinator and fellow runner friend, Ericka McKibbin, I was informed that Girls on the Run is offering so much more than that to young girls.
What is Girls on the Run of the Big Bend? It is a transformational program that engages girls in 3rd through 8th grade to inspire healthy living and self-confidence. We are a part of a network of over 200 councils who serve girls across the US and Canada. We believe that every girl can embrace who she is, can define who she wants to be, can rise to any challenge, can change the world. Can!
What is the mission of Girls on the Run of the Big Bend? Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun experienced based curriculum that creatively integrates running.
What does Girls on the Run of the Big Bend offer to girls?
- 24 lessons conducted by a certified GOTR coach
- All curriculum materials and lesson hand-outs
- A GOTR t-shirt and water bottle
- 5K race event
- 5K finish awards
- Girls on the Run support, communication, newsletters, etc. throughout the season
Is there a certain age range for girls to join? Girls in grades 3rd through 8th grade are eligible to join GOTR.
What kinds of events do the girls participate in? Led by certified Girls on the Run coaches, participants typically meet twice a week in groups of 10-20 at local schools or community sites each spring and fall season. The idea of the program is to combine running with life skills development. There is never an emphasis on speed or competition – all girls are simply encouraged to do their best. We serve girls of ALL backgrounds, shapes, sizes and abilities, and at the end of each season, all GOTR teams in Leon County come together to complete a uncompetitive 5K run/walk (3.1 mile) which is a magical finish and big celebration!
How can the community contribute to Girls on the Run and their mission? Girls on the Run Big Bend is powered by volunteers and community donations. We have various volunteer opportunities from Coaching, Running Buddies, 5K Race, Board Members and community tabling events. The best way to find out how you can give or volunteer is to checkout our website ‘Get Involved’ section at www.gotrbigbend.org.
Do you have special events for the public? We are in the process of launching our inaugural season in February. There will be various fundraising events hosted from donation fitness classes, share nights, holiday gift parties, etc. Two unique initiatives of Girls on the Run of the Big Bend that launched this fall are:
- SoleMates: This is the adult charity running program of Girls on the Run. Men and Women training for endurance events and raise funds (up to $310) to support girl programming in the Big Bend. For more information, contact Ashley Hiatt at Ashley.email@example.com.
- Adopt A Runner: This is a scholarship program that ensures every girl has the opportunity to experience GOTR. For $150, an individual or business can help a girl change her life and be inspired.
Where can parents go to sign up their daughters? Registration for our Spring Season will open January 20th and run until February 3rd. Registration details will be posted on our website and our FB page.
Is there a fee for signing up for the program? Our fee per girl to participate is $150 for the 10-12 week program. Our intent is to offer the GOTR program to as many girls as possible and even though the actual cost is nearly $200 per girl, all are subsidized to some extent because of our fundraising efforts. Financial assistance is available through scholarships and we are committed to working with all families that may need assistance.Website – www.gotrbigbend.org Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/gotrbigbend Twitter Page – https://twitter.com/GOTRBigBend Instagram – http://instagram.com/gotr_big_bend# Email Address – firstname.lastname@example.org or Ericka.email@example.com
