Recently, Harley and I had the great pleasure to travel from Tallahassee, Florida over to St. Augustine, Florida to attend National Fossil Day at the Castillo de San Marcos for Harley to present to a group of elementary school classes and for us to get some amazing local St. Augustine food from our favorite food truck, Nalu’s Tropical Takeout!  Just the mere thought of getting to eat at this place gets me all foodie excited!

Here’s a little back story ~

Located at the entrance to Anastasia State Park, Nalu’s Tropical Takeout has become a St. Augustine staple.  Fresh ingredients made to order and now accepting credit cards, SCORE!  Priding themselves on the fact that they are St. Augustine’s Original Taco Stand, they serve the best fish tacos around.

Several years ago during a trip to Central Florida, Harley and I were guided to try the “Best Fish Tacos in Florida” by a local restaurant owner in Hammock Beach, Florida.  Harley would be leading a field trip for one of his geological societies the following day and we had to do a dry-run for time, which would end at Anastasia State Park so, being the foodies that we are, we decided to stop by and give it a shot.  Our restaurant owner friend informed us, “don’t be swayed by the looks of things, try it first and then judge.

So that afternoon we found ourselves outside the Surf Shop, which used to be a gas station, in which Nalu’s Tropical Takeout has their food camper parked and though it looked a little suspect, we gave it a try!  At that time they only accepted cash, so we opted to split an order of the Baja Fish Tacos (which is served with 2 flour tortillas, blackened Ono (Wahoo) or Mahi, Baja sauce, shredded cabbage and cheddar/Jack cheese).  After watching the food being prepared to order and seeing the result, we quickly opted to scrape up more cash for each of us to get our own.

Now, more than 3 years later, every single time we find ourselves in St. Augustine, we must make time to go to Nalu’s for lunch and if we see friends headed that way we tip them off to the best place to eat on the beach.  Realistically, we would drive the two and a half hours over there just to eat at this place, it’s really THAT good, and this trip was no different!

With a small manageable menu to keep dishes fresh and tasty, Nalu’s Tropical Takeout keeps things simple and affordable.  No dripping, over-thought dishes, just good fresh food that wont leave you feeling guilty for indulging.

So the next time you find yourself in historic St. Augustine, FL drive on over to the entrance of Anastasia State Park and check out Nalu’s Tropical Takeout at 1020 Anastasia Boulevard, St. Augustine Beach, FL ~ (904) 501-9592.  Open Wednesday through Monday (Closed Tuesday’s) from 11:00 am until Sunset and grab some lunch to take into the park or your favorite relaxing location in St. Augustine and enjoy!  Get out there and support #eatlocal even if it’s not in your hometown!

Note ~ I was so excited about eating lunch here that I forgot to take my food shot!!  Ugh!!!

  1. Nalu’s IS the best fish tacos anywhere! Let your friends know they also have a second location on US 1 South at the corner of Wildwood & US 1, across the street from Publix. A little storefront with a few seats inside but the same fabulous food!
