Some days I find that I just cannot muster the will to go to a group fitness class, ok honestly it is actually almost every day, that is why I choose to run and weight train on my own or with my husband. But when I heard about the concept that PEAR Sports created with their Mobile Integrated Training Program I was excited to have a chance to try it out!
Currently compatible with iPhone 4s or 5, the Mobile Training Intelligence package that retails for $99.95 and includes a comfortable stay-put chest strap and stay-put Stride earphones that include controls that allow you to pause workouts, skip music and answer calls. I have to say that as a user of other brands of heart rate monitoring products, I found that the strap was very comfortable and does not require you to pre-moisten as with other brands of monitors.
I have used the wide variety of options available with this device including my favorite Free Format Workout which allows me to watch my average heart rate bpm, time elapsed during my training, average pace (if a distance sport) and the total calories burned during the workout. This was great in a recent morning spin class where I tracked my progress throughout the duration of the class and was updated on my zone training for the 45 minute duration.
But that option is just the tip of the iceberg for this little app that is a FREE download on the Apple App Store! Even better! PEAR Sports also offers a Plans from the Pros Store in the Workout area of the app with a link to their many different types of Training Plans, Goal oriented workouts and Activity Types just to name a few. In addition to a running coaching program, I tried the 30-Minute Strength Workout titled Bodyweight Burn 1 and the 45-Minute Moderate HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout titled Tread’N’Shred Moderate 1 which are both coached by Nancy Halterman (AND she’s a fellow “Ginger“!) *Please note – Not all workouts listed in the Training Plan Download workout area are free but there are many that are*
The exercise programs that I tried required little to no extra equipment. A simple set of dumbbells were all that were required with one, and I love that there is an option to view the exercise form that should be used before beginning the workout. Hindu Push-ups, Burpees, Squats, Lunges and many other great intensity setters are offered for maximal results and high calorie burn without the costly overhead of a gym or pricey weekly trainer that some of us just simply cannot afford as an added monthly cost. I love the concept of a trainer without a trainer, in that when you are too intense the program lets you know, but it also voice pushes you when you need to step it up!
Still not convinced to give them a try? Stuck on your choice of running program for zone feedback and route map tracking? Well, PEAR Sports has you covered there too! The “Flip it Sideways” option allows you to view the intensity of your workouts and varying zones post run/workout. The app also tracks your maximum heart rate during those training sessions. My 197 was a long steady hill filled with some pressure breathing exercises! Map tracking is also available for those runs you take off your normal routes and you want to revisit those again at a later date! Or, snap a screen shot and share them with your favorite running group or running buddies. The positive possibilities seem endless with the PEAR Sports system.
